Estimation of productive losses caused by withdrawal of antibiotic growth promoter from pig diets – Meta-analysis Scientia Agricola
Cardinal,Kátia Maria; Andretta,Ines; Silva,Marcos Kipper da; Stefanello,Thais Bastos; Schroeder,Bruna; Ribeiro,Andréa Machado Leal.
ABSTRACT: This study was designed to simulate productive and economic losses due to the withdrawal of antibiotic growth promoters (AGP) from pig diets. Articles that compared diets with AGP (AGP+) or without AGP (AGP–) for pigs were collected from electronic databases and the performance results were entered in a database. A meta-analysis was performed following the sequence: graphical analysis, correlation, and variance-covariance. The performance results observed in the meta-analysis, feed cost, and AGP costs were used to build equations to estimate the economic effect of withdrawing AGP. The database comprised 81 scientific articles containing 103 experiments totalizing 42,923 pigs. Avilamycin (24.7 %) was the most frequent AGP in the database, followed...

Genetic polymorphism and relationships among several swine populations of landrace, large white and duroc breeds Ciência Rural
Tagliaro,Cláudia Helena; Franco,Maria Helena Lartigau Pereira; Weimer,Tania Azevedo.
The data of three protein polymorphisms were used to investigate the genetic relationships among the Landrace, Large White and Duroc swine breeds reared in Brazil, 12 other populations of these same breeds from various countries and a population of Belgium Landrace. The dendrogram, constructed from matrix of genetic distance coefficients, disclosed three large groups clustered by breed. Among them, the Landrace and the Large White showed in average closer resemblance (D= 0.203) than between them and Duroc (D= 0.241). It the three breeds, the smallest genetic distances were found between Brazilian and Cuban pig populations (Landrace: D = 0.060; Large White: D = 0.052; Duroc: D = 0.065), although there were not reports of pig exchanges between these two...

Guimarães,Flávio R.; Saddi,Thelma M.; Vitral,Cláudia Lamarca; Pinto,Marcelo A.; Gaspar,Ana Maria C.; Souto,Francisco José D..
There is no information about evidence of hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection in swines in Central Brazil. In order to assess if HEV circulates in swines of the State of Mato Grosso, Central Brazil, a seroprevalence study was conducted including pigs from 17 farms, corresponding to 13 counties. The animals were randomly chosen among pigs arriving to two slaughterhouses between December 2002 and February 2003. Serum samples were collected and tested for IgG antibodies against HEV (anti-HEV) by enzyme immunoassay (EIA). This EIA uses two HEV recombinant proteins as antigens, a mosaic protein (MP-II) and a protein containing region 452-617 of the ORF2 of the HEV Burma strain as coating antigens. 211 out of 260 pigs (81.2%; 95CI = 75.7%, 85.6%) were anti-HEV...

Heterogeneous Production Efficiency of Specialized Swine Producers AgEcon
Tonsor, Glynn T.; Featherstone, Allen M..
This research evaluates the efficiency of swine firms differing by specialization type and employed technologies. Measures of technical, allocative, scale, economic, and overall efficiency are separately and jointly estimated for farrow-to-finish, farrow-to-feeder, feeder-to-finish, farrow-to-weanling, weanling-to-feeder, and mixed operations. Findings confirm appreciable differences in efficiency and causes of efficiency. Results suggest that overall efficiency of farrow-to-finish and farrow-to-weanling operations is on average lower than farrow-to-feeder, feeder-to-finish, and weanling-to-feeder operations. In addition, Tobit models examining how demographic factors, farm type, and input expenses influence efficiency indicate additional variation across...

How can nutritional strategies and feed technologies in pig production affect the logistical costs of manure distribution? R. Bras. Zootec.
Afonso,Esther Ramalho; Nacimento,Rafael Araujo; Palhares,Julio Cesar Pascale; Gameiro,Augusto Hauber.
ABSTRACT The objective with this study was to evaluate the impact of different swine nutritional strategies and technologies, as well as the land spread system, on logistical costs of pig manure distribution. For this, pigs were fed a conventional diet (C0) or a diet supplemented with 0.01% phytase (C1); organic minerals (40% substitution; C2); synthetic amino acids at reduced dietary crude protein levels (C3); or a combination of the three strategies (C4). All pig manure was weighed, then its chemical composition was determined. The mineral values and volume of manure produced were extrapolated to corresponding pig farm sizes in Sao Paulo state (300, 650, and 1000 sows) from real pig manure levels to produce simulations. To determine the logistical cost...

HUMORAL RESPONSE TO DIFFERENT VACCINATION SCHEMES AGAINST CLASSICAL SWINE FEVER (CSF) SUCCESSIVELY APPLIED DURING AN OUTBREAK OF THE DISEASE Rev Salud Anim.
Percedo,María Irian; Alfonso,P; Frías,María Teresa; Díaz de Arce,Heydi; Barrera,Maritza; Fonseca,O; Castell,Sara.
Vaccination against classical swine fever (CSF) is an essential measure for its control in endemic areas, and the Chinese Strain has been used with success in already disease free countries. Nevertheless the complexity of the factors interacting on the epidemiology and control of CSF, when the expected success is not reached with the vaccination of premises, doubts always fall on the vaccine used and the vaccination scheme applied In consecuences, many changes in vaccination scheme by the breeders are frecuently observed whitout positive influence in CSF control. To clarify the CSF recurrence in a herd vaccinated by a different scheme as the one recommended in the national control program, serological samples were taken to different animal groups in three...

Identification of informative performance traits in swine using principal component analysis Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Barbosa,L.; Lopes,P.S.; Regazzi,A.J.; Guimarães,S.E.F.; Torres,R.A..
Using principal component analysis, records of 435 animals from an F2 swine population were used to identity independent and informative variables of economically important performance. The following performance traits were recorded: litter size at birth (BL), litter size at weaning (WL), teat number (TN), birth weight (BW), weight at 21 (W21), 42 (W42), 63 (W63) and 77 (W77) days of age, average daily gain (ADG), feed intake (FI) and feed:gain ratio (FGR) from 77 to 105 days of age. Six principal components expressed variation lower than 0.7 (eigen values lower than 0.7) suggesting that six variables could be discarded with little information loss. The discarded variables present significant simple linear correlation with the retained variables. Retaining...

Zotti,Everson; Resmini,Fábio Arnhold; Schutz,Luis Gustavo; Volz,Nilson; Milani,Raul Pelissari; Bridi,Ana Maria; Alfieri,Amauri Alcindo; Silva,Caio Abércio da.
ABSTRACT A total of 5502 piglets from 435 sows were selected for evaluation of the effect of piglet birthweight and sow parity on mortality rate (MR), growth performance, and carcass traits in pigs. Piglets were distributed into one of eight categories according to their weight (<600, 601-800, 801-1000, 1001-1200, 1201-1400, 1401-1600, 1601-1800, and >1801 g) and sows were classified according to parity (1-5). The maximum MR during lactation (day 0 to day 21) was found in category <600 g, whereas the lowest was observed in categories ≥1401 g. Pigs with greater body weight (BW) at birth were equivalently greater until 59 days of age. Average daily weight gain (ADG) was improved by increasing piglet birthweight between 0 and 21 days as indicated by...

Induction of puberty and synchronization of estrus in gilts with eCG and GnRH R. Bras. Zootec.
Labêta,Camilla Pereira de Souza; Vasconcelos,Bruno da Silva de; Mello,Marco Roberto Bourg de.
ABSTRACT In this study, we investigated the effects of eCG and GnRH on the induction of puberty in prepubertal gilts and evaluated the pregnancy rate and litter size in these females. Thirty 140-day-old gilts with an average weight of 80 kg were randomly divided into two treatments: hormonal treatment (n = 15): 1000 IU of eCG and 50 μg of GnRH; and control group (n = 15): induction of estrus by male presence. Gilts were inseminated at the second estrus and pregnancy was confirmed by the non-return to estrus. At farrowing, litter size, average piglet weight, and number of stillborn and mummified piglets were recorded for analysis. The variable pregnancy rate was subjected to the Chi-square test (χ2), while variables age at first estrus, weight at...
